Opening Prompt

Tell me what you learned about God this week?

Let me share with you what I learned about God this week…

Focus: Life is found in Christ.

  • Tell: Tell about a time you tried to earn something or accomplish something but couldn’t and needed help. Perhaps, you tried to save up enough money to buy something, but couldn’t or perhaps you tried to do a really good job at school or in a group but didn’t get the award.
  • Share: There are things in our lives that we can’t do on our own. We need help. This is like our sin struggle. We all do wrong things and no matter how hard we try on our own, we still sin and need the help of Jesus to save us from our sins.
  • Ask: What is the good news of the Gospel?

Read this Scripture with your family:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

 — Ephesians 2:8-10

Talk about this devotional thought:

The Good News of the Gospel is that God, in his mercy, love, and grace extends to us the gift of salvation for those who put their trust in Jesus.

Ephesians 2:1-10 teaches very important truths:

  • We are unable to rescue ourselves from our sins.
  • We can’t be good enough or do enough good things to earn a relationship with God, nor do we have to.
  • God’s offer of salvation is the greatest gift that He has given those who believe out of his incredible love for us.
  • We are not saved by good works, but created for good works.
  • When we trust in Jesus, we have a new life!
  • As we grow in our relationship with Christ, the Holy Spirit will guide us and help us use the gifts and talents God has given us to do good.

Questions to Ask

  • How can you grow in your relationship with God?
  • What are some unique gifts that God has given you?
  • How can you use those gifts for God’s plans and purposes?
  • How does the Holy Spirit work in the lives of believers?

(Tip for parents: Let kids answer freely. There’s no rush to correct everything. The goal is conversation, not perfection.)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation and new life. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us from our sins. Help us identify and recognize your plans and purposes for our lives. And help our words and actions glorify you.
