Opening Prompt

Tell me what you learned about God this week?

Let me share with you what I learned about God this week…

Focus: Work is a part of God’s good design, and we are called to be stewards.

  • Tell: Tell your kid about the season in your life when you were wrestling through “what you wanted to be when you grew up”.
  • Share: Share how work has been challenging but also life-giving for you. Whether you are a Doctor or a stay at home parent, there is something to be said about the difficulty but also reward of our work!
  • Ask: Ask your kid what they want to be when they grow up? Has it changed over the years, or is it still the same? Why do you want to be that?

Read this Scripture with your family:

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:26-27

Talk about this devotional thought:

In Genesis 1, God created everything. It started with light and darkness, then with skies and sea, plants and animals, and finally with humans. However, there is something special about the way He made men and women; God made them in his own image! This separates us from everything else that was created.

  • We have value unlike any other creature
  • We can live in a relationship with one another, unlike anything else
  • We can live with God unlike any other creature.

This changes the way we see ourselves and others!

But God didn’t just create us for relationships with each other, God created us with work in mind. We were designed to work! This is what that means: work isn’t a consequence of a sinful world (it was given before the fall). Work isn’t a bad thing; it is actually good. And God cares about what work you do AND how you work!

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”

  • This truth doesn’t just change us when we have a job… it changes things now
    • It changes how we approach school
    • It changes how we work in sports

Work is a good thing, and it is meant to be for the Glory of God!

Questions to Ask

  • What do you think it means to work or live for “the glory of God”? (This is a great time to explain this concept)
  • How can we represent God in a good way at school?
  • Why does it matter that you were created in the image of God?

(Tip for parents: Let kids answer freely. There’s no rush to correct everything. The goal is conversation, not perfection.)

Prayer

Each day this week, pray this short prayer together:

“God, would you help me remember that I am created in your image? Would you help me remember this week that you love me, and that you want a relationship with me? God, thank you for everything you’ve done for me. In return, would I live and work for your glory this week? Amen”

Monthly Memory Verse

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” Ephesians 1:13
