Opening Prompt

Tell me what you learned about God this week?

Let me share with you what I learned about God this week…

Focus: Even in the Chaos, God is our hope and peace.

  • Tell: Tell your kids about a time when life felt like it was falling apart, yet God gave you confidence that you were going to make it through.
  • Share: Share the difference between happiness (circumstantial) and joy (unconditional). Give them the space to participate in this conversation.
  • Ask: What is one thing that you can remind yourself about God when you feel overwhelmed?

Read this Scripture with your family:

“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,  so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 3:6-7

Talk about this devotional thought:

Peter is showing us something foundational to the Christian faith. First, hard times are inevitable. The question is not “if” you will have to go through hard times, but “when” you will have to go through them. However, Peter gives us the inside scoop on why we have to endure these things. Peter tells us what our suffering should result in: the praise and glory and honor of Jesus!

It is really easy to praise God when things are going good, but do we praise him when things are difficult? We should praise God when He is testing our faith! We should praise God when suffering surrounds us completely. Here is why we can still praise him

  1. We can trust He is still in control
  2. We can trust He is still good
  3. We can trust that God is trying to produce something good in us.

Questions to Ask

  • Has there been a time when it was hard to trust that God is good? What did that time look like?
  • What has God done for you that reminds you that He always loves you and is always good?
  • How can I trust God even when it is difficult?

(Tip for parents: Let kids answer freely. There’s no rush to correct everything. The goal is conversation, not perfection.)

Prayer

Each day this week, pray this short prayer together:

“Dear God, thank You for being with me, even when things are difficult. Would you help me to trust you even when it is difficult to trust you? And when things get difficult, would I still have the strength to praise you?”

Monthly Memory Verse

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” Ephesians 1:13
