Opening Prompt

Tell me what you learned about God this week?

Let me share with you what I learned about God this week…

Focus: United in Christ

  • Tell: Share a picture of a team. Teams work together to make a goal, hit a homerun, put on a play, etc. Do teams always get along? Teams are composed of lots of different people who are all united or coming together to accomplish something or do something. But in all teams there will be disagreements and challenges.
  • Share: For all of history, there have been people disagreeing with one another, divisions and conflicts. The Bible teaches us that Jesus is our peace. God’s Spirit works in the lives of followers of Jesus and believers can be united around Jesus and what He did on the cross.
  • Ask: What do you think it means to be united in Christ?

Read this Scripture with your family:

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.”

Ephesians 2:13-16

Talk about this devotional thought:

We are all very different and often view life and circumstances through the lens of our own attitudes and experiences. This often leads to feelings of disagreement, alienation, and at times loneliness. However, as believers, Christ’s love brings us peace, truth to live by, and hope as He is with us, helping us and guiding us.

This hope and peace that we have in Christ unites believers. As we pursue God and grow closer to him through his Word and prayer, God enables us to live at peace with one another. God transforms and unites believers in Christ.

Questions to Ask

  • What is peace and where does it come from?
  • How can we be peacemakers at school, work, church?
  • How should believers handle disagreements?
  • Why is it important to study God’s Word and pray daily?

(Tip for parents: Let kids answer freely. There’s no rush to correct everything. The goal is conversation, not perfection.)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love for us. Thank you for sending Jesus to come, live a perfect life, and die for our sins so that we can have a relationship with You. Thank you that you are with us and that you break down the walls that divide.

Help us be sensitive to your working in our lives, and help us live in a way that honors you, pointing others to you. Unite us in Christ and help us demonstrate the peace and love that overflows from our relationship with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Monthly Memory Verse

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

 — Ephesians 2:10
